Family friendly fun swoops in to thrill crowds at Air Waves Portrush

Air Waves Portrush will feature an impressive array of family friendly fun as Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council reveals a spectacular line-up of ground attractions for the two-day event.

The largest airshow on the island of Ireland, running on Saturday, 31st August and Sunday, 1st September 2019, will feature a host of family attractions including: live music, trade stands, fun zone, artisan food market, arts and crafts stalls, military vehicles and high-tech STEM village.

The ground-based entertainment will complement a dazzling line-up of world-famous aerial attractions for two days of thrilling flying that will include the fast and furious P-47-D Thunderbolt American fighter as the star attraction.

Looking forward to the weekend, The Deputy Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Alderman Sharon McKillop, said: “We are delighted to announce a fantastic array of on-the-ground activities during Air Waves Portrush, including lots of aviation and military themed attractions which help to make our event unique. This year, we have an enhanced programme including on-stage entertainment which will add to the festival atmosphere in the seaside resort with some great live acts to look forward to.”

The unrivalled family fun will be hosted in two main areas in Portrush – Village North at Lansdown Green and Antrim Gardens and Village South at East Strand Car Park.

Village South (East Strand Car Park) will feature static military displays that will include an impressive static Typhoon aircraft and the Ulster Aviation Society’s must-see collection of vintage aircraft. The Ulster Gliding Club will also give visitors the chance to get up close and personal with a static glider.

The STEM Village, sponsored my MATRIX, will bring together over 20 word-class local STEM employers and education providers aimed at inspiring young people to consider an exciting and rewarding STEM orientated career with interactive, fun and engaging displays and tasks.

A new addition to this year’s line-up at Village South is a variety of live entertainment with acts including the RAF Jazz Ensemble, The Leading Ladies and Tamlaghmore Silver Band taking to the stage over the two days.

Village North (Lansdown Green and Antrim Gardens) will provide visitors with the chance to sample the very best of home-grown cuisine with tasty food by Naturally North Coast & Glens Artisan Market, where talented traders rub shoulders with innovative new start-ups to create a mouth-watering mix of delicious dishes.

The Ulster Military Vehicle club has rolled out an armoury of combat cars and more to mark its 20th anniversary. This will include a dynamic eight-ton Combat Reconnaissance Light Tank (Sabre), which was specially designed for modern combat, alongside a selection of GI Army jeeps and an RAF Hillman staff vehicle.

There will also be a Static Helicopter Display at Portrush Recreation Grounds where visitors can get an opportunity to see magnificent rotorcrafts such as Vietnam US veterans Huey and Loach.

The Army Cadets, Sea Cadets, Model Aircraft Club, traders, exhibitions and Fun Zone also add to the exciting mix in the Village North.

There will also be a stunning pyrotechnic aerial display in Portstewart by The Global Stars on the Saturday evening that will also include a packed programme of family entertainment, live music and a magnificent seafront fireworks display.
